The Fountainhead Arts Residency, nestled in the vibrant city of Miami, is a highly respected program, making it a sought-after destination for artists from all corners of the globe. Established by Kathryn and Dan Mikesell in 2008, the Fountainhead Residency has since hosted over 300 artists from more than 36 countries, positioning itself as a melting pot of diverse artistic expressions. 

Fountainhead Residency has a holistic approach to artistic development. Beyond offering a nurturing environment for creation, the residency facilitates introductions of artists to prominent curators, collectors, and gallerists through one-on-one studio visits. This not only provides artists a platform to display their work but also paves the way for invaluable networking opportunities.

The residency takes pride in its unwavering commitment to diversity. The Fountainhead Residency ensures comprehensive support for artists. They are provided with roundtrip airfare, comfortable living and workspace, and a stipend. Additionally, they can tap into a network of professionals, including attorneys, financial advisors, and business consultants, for entrepreneurial guidance.

The residency is located in the historic Morningside neighborhood of Miami, a picturesque area known for its tree-lined streets, vintage homes, and rich history. Founded in the 1920s as “Bayshore,” Morningside prospered in the mid-20th century and became Miami’s first historic district in 1984. Nestled north of Downtown Miami and within the general Upper East Side area, Morningside is also known for its diverse population and close proximity to downtown Miami. The residency itself is housed in a 1950s home that epitomizes Miami’s modern architectural style and is just a stone’s throw away from Biscayne Bay. Artists residing there are provided with amenities such as paddleboards, kayaks, and bikes, allowing them to explore and engage with the natural beauty and cultural richness of the surroundings.

Each year, Fountainhead hosts an open call, which is limited to 300 applications. Beyond this, alumni have the privilege of nominating artists, and some residencies are filled through collaborations with cultural partners. A curatorial committee is responsible for the final selection of artists. Artists are chosen based on several criteria, including their artistic excellence, proven commitment to their craft, the potential impact of the residency on their career trajectory, a keen desire to engage with the community, and certain personal qualities such as open-mindedness and the ability to articulate their vision effectively.
