Founded in 1984, The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) in the picturesque town of Johnson, Vermont, has become a leading global residency for artists and writers. Its tranquil setting, enriched by its history, provides an unparalleled fusion of inspiration and peace, making it a prime destination for creative minds.

At the Vermont Studio Center (VSC), artists and writers from diverse genres are invited to two to four-week residencies, enjoying spacious studios open round the clock. These studios, ranging from 170 to 300 square feet, are next to their comfortable private rooms, a dining hall, and local attractions. The VSC campus includes specialized facilities such as a print shop, a digital lab, and a versatile crafting area catering to metal, wood, and ceramics. Beyond the creative space, the residency nestles in a quaint Vermont village, offering residents a blend of nature’s swimming spots, trails for hiking and biking, and the rustic charm of nearby towns. 

The town of Johnson, located in Lamoille County, Vermont, is a place steeped in history and natural beauty. Johnson is a town where the majesty of the Green Mountains meets the serenity of the Gihon River, creating a picturesque setting that has inspired artists, writers, and nature enthusiasts for decades. Johnson’s history dates back to the 18th century. The town and a part of neighboring Cambridge were collectively known as the “King’s College Tract.” This tract was created by a royal charter issued by British King George III in 1774. Interestingly, the King’s College Tract was reserved for the potential expansion of King’s College in New York, known today as Columbia University. This connection to one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the United States adds a unique historical layer to Johnson’s story.
