The short film Studio Visit with Gabi Kricheli is available to watch at the top of the page.
Expanding his artistic voice across diverse mediums, Gabi Kricheli invites us into a world of encrypted revelations and rebellious sentiment. A multi-talented artist and musician, Kricheli’s canon encompasses sculpture, installations, and video art – each embodying his passionate drive to challenge and question social norms and political contexts. “In desperate times, my work grows more radical,” Kricheli reveals, his art serving as symbolic dispatches meant to be deciphered in the aftermath of a metaphorical flood.
My introduction to Kricheli took place during his time at the Artport residency program in Tel Aviv. It was there that he daringly transformed his studio into a tobacco field, documenting this evolution through video art. The project is a powerful commentary on the act of artistic creation in an era of excess.
Kricheli’s art, whether it be sculptural works originating from organic matter like tobacco plants and trees or installations molded from ceramic and concrete, embodies profound adaptability. His choice of medium shifts in sync with the concept and the spatial environment at hand, creating a fluid artistic language that binds his oeuvre.
Kricheli’s art wields disruption and humor as powerful tools. Through clever deception, he spotlights the disjunction between perceived truths and reality, nudging viewers towards introspection and a re-evaluation of ingrained perspectives.
The attached video presents Kricheli examining the vital role of artists amidst the sweeping cultural shifts triggered by the technological revolution, offering a glimpse into his thought process and his unwavering commitment to challenging the status quo through art.
