The short film Studio Visit with Keren and Golan Gafni is available to watch at the top of the page.
Keren and Golan Gafni are partners in life and pioneers in the field of visual communication design. Operating from their self-founded studio in Tel Aviv, the couple’s signature style is characterized by deep conceptual research and understanding of the content they are tasked with designing. Their designs, frequently emphasized by a remarkable use of printmaking, underscore the concepts and aesthetics of their projects, ultimately resulting in collectible art objects. Their work spans various sectors, such as culture, gastronomy, and education. Notably, they have designed culinary books that frame food as a multi-dimensional concept, rich in culture, history, taste, and aesthetics.
Their entrepreneurial spirit extends to the world of publishing, where, in 2007, they co-founded the A5 print magazine with fellow designer Tali Green. As chief editors, they have transformed A5 into a prominent platform for creators across all fields of art and design. The magazine, named after the A5 paper size in which it’s published, is a dynamic blend of curated photographs, paintings, illustrations, and graphic works from both Israeli and international creators. Each limited edition issue focuses on a different and predefined topic, making it a sought-after piece in Israel and abroad.
Having received nominations in 2016 and 2017 for the Best Art Director of the Year category at STACK, an international competition for independent magazines, A5 has solidified its place within the global design community. The magazine has been featured at numerous exhibitions, including the 23rd Graphic Design Biennale in Brno, Czech Republic, the Colophon 2009 magazine fair in Luxembourg, and the Parede poster exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, among others. Each issue’s launch becomes a creative festival, marked by a unique exhibition, a visual interpretation of the issue’s theme, and a gathering of artists from a wide array of fields.
In our accompanying video, Keren and Golan offer an intimate look at their work process, sharing insights into their thorough research methodology, which precedes their design process. This gives viewers a rare glimpse into how the couple’s innovative ideas are brought to life.
